About Eri Silk:

Eri Silk is also known as Ahimsa Silk or ‘Peace Silk’, because the silkworm completes its life cycle and moth exits from the cocoon before it is processed.

Eri silk a.k.a. Ryndia, Peace silk, Ahimsa silk is indigenous to Meghalaya and is also one of the strongest natural fiber whose strength increases with each wash, ensuring better product life.

The harvested fibres are not continuous like in mulberry and other natural silks. Hence, eri silk is spun and not reeled.

Eri silk is our inspiration. Our products range from stoles to scarves to throws to fabrics etc., inspired by Eri’s incredible properties.

Uniquely Versatile:

It is warm in winter and cool in summer. Eri silk is an all-weather fabric with the cool comfort of cotton, the warmth of wool and the subtle elegant lustre of silk. It offers unparalleled comfort and sophistication. It is a perfect choice for clothing and home decor. It is eco-friendly, ethically sourced, breathable, and durable.

Eri silk yarn combines well with other natural fibres/yarns; enhancing the quality of blended fabrics with its unique drapability and feel. Coarser counts give a wooly texture; finer counts give a linen, cotton or silky texture depending on the weaving technique selected.

The versatile Eri Silk can elevate any style, add a touch of timeless beauty and refinement to any collection.

Artisans:

In the difficult topography of Meghalaya, India, the homeland of Garo, Hajong, Koch, Rabha and other tribes, 12 in all, at the foothills of the Himalayas, there exists a rich, ancient tradition of rearing, spinning and weaving Eri silk. Weaving is an integral part of their culture, passed down from generations, primarily to cater to personal and community needs. Each tribe has its own dialect, customs and traditions, and style of weaving, techniques, colours and design motifs. Despite it the tribes are unified by the weaving craftsmanship, which is slow and elaborate process requiring immense skill, expertise, and patience.

Living in harmony with nature these tribes are very particular about being sustainable in their practices. They use natural fibers like eri and cotton, which are sourced locally. Even for dyeing, they use natural, plant-based materials. The fabrics they curate are handwoven. Their looms are simple, operated by hand, the textiles they create are intricate and long-lasting, most designs and motifs they use hold cultural significance.

Even in this fast-paced world, the weavers continue to preserve the indigenous crafts against odds, while simultaneously collaborating to build brand TriWea in order to reach market in order to sustain themselves and grow.

The TriWea Supports:

  1. Sustainable eco-products
  2. Reduction in carbon footprint
  3. Promotion of Tribal Heritage
  4. Empowerment of Tribal women
  5. Livelihood Locally
